Horse Racing- Horses for courses
It is the first day of the York Ebor meeting and today’s feature race is the Juddmonte International. It looks as though it will be an interesting clash with the four market leaders Rip Van Winkle, Byword, Twice Over and Dick Turpin.
Which of these will come out on top is anyone’s guess but I have a sneaky fancy for outsider Cavalryman as an each way bet at 33/1.With the Godolphin team hitting top form and Frankie Dettori riding as well as ever I think it rep[resents a value for money bet.
In the blog recently I have been praising the Signpost section of the Racing Post. I have found it very useful in spotting potential winners. Today I want to mention another punters aid in the trade paper and that is the Postdata grid. The portion of the Read More…

Horse Racing and Pop-Are they oil and water?
The question this morning is do racing folk and pop fans mix. I ask the question after Saturday’s race meeting at Newbury which was followed by a concert from Westlife. Numerically it has to be judged a success. Over 30,000 people attended the meeting which was a modern record for a course Saturday fixture.
The real problem was that the majority of the paying public were not interested in the racing and had only come along for the post race concert. Respected trainer Barry Hills left half way through the meeting claiming and I quote “that it was a disgrace”.
There were obviously difficulties on Saturday with that number of extra visitors creating a bigger demand for facilities such as the bars and toilets. It also made moving around the paddocks and enclosures slow and difficult, a bit like Read More…

Is Tajneed too good to be true?
There is a saying “if anything appears too good to be true it probably is”. I get that feeling today about The Great St Wilfred sprint at Ripon today. Over the last few days Dandy Nicholls horse Tajneed has come down in the betting from 9/1 and is likely to go off as favourite at around 3/1.
If you look at it he has a lot going for him, ground that he loves, a course he has run and won at course and distance 3 times before. His trainer is a past master at producing sprinters and he is very favourably drawn. Just to add the icing on the cake, Tom Segal, Pricewise in the Racing Post has tipped him to win. In fact the only thing stopping him being a cast iron certainty is that Barry Dennis Read More…

It’s Friday the 13th- Shall I stay in bed?
If it was not bad enough that it is Friday the 13th today, to have meetings at Newmarket, Newbury and Newcastle all on the same day is going to be confusing. My natural inclination is to pull the bed sheet over my head and stay in bed all day. But needs must when the taxman and the mortgage drive so I suppose I shall have to put the nose to the grindstone once more.
I am going to make a confession to you, but keep it to yourself please. I am a closet Coronation Street watcher and at the moment there is a storyline about the local bookie being swindled out of £4,000. The only thing that seems to surprise me is that there was £4,000 in the shop to pay out the scam bet.
In all the years Read More…

Follow the trends
Back in the dark ages, that is before Betfair and the Internet, whenever a big race was coming up serious punters would spend hours pouring over form books trying to find the winner. These days many have forsaken the form book and look towards Trends as the key to unravelling the big races.
The theory behind Trends is that you are looking for variables which will indicate the profile of the horse most likely to win the race. There are a variety of factors that you might want to take into consideration such as age, past performance, weight and previous races that the horse has run in. In fact it often depends upon the particular race as to which factors are important. For instance, in the Derby age is totally irrelevant as all the runners are 3 year olds.
